Southern Sudan Working Tour

Southern Sudan Working Tour

In February 2008, a delegation of 9 Australians will visit Southern Sudan and to carry out further consultation with the local community to determine their specific and important needs for the construction of a school and education/health centre.

The first phase of the construction will commence with the building of a multi-purpose site office/information centre. The working tour aims to build effective community involvement both in Southern Sudan and Australia around the issues of human rights, justice and sustainable development. The working tour reflects the belief that the people of Southern Sudan and Australia can come together in mutual understanding to build bridges between the two cultures which promotes peace and puts into action the principals of social justice.

The group of Australians led by representatives from South Sudan Development Agency (SSUDA) International Inc will take part in a unique four week working tour in Yomding Payam.

The delegation of 9 are from various sectors of the community including building and construction, carpentry, bricklaying and community needs analysis, including education, health, agricultural & environmental requirements

Mr. Gatwech Kulang, the Chief Executive Officer of SSUDA International is grateful for the spirit of generosity among Melbournians, who are backing his vision to empower the children of Southern Sudan. He hopes the Working Tour will mark the beginning of construction work.

By helping communities build new classrooms, SSUDA International Inc hopes to promote community ownership of this school, where education can provide a base from which development can begin. Not only does education provide young people with the knowledge to build their future, it also acts as a stabilizing factor, promoting the principals of social justice.

The Yomding Education Centre Project will eventually provide education to over 350 children as well as providing training to approximately 10 teachers who currently only have basic teaching skills. It will be an effective model for future school construction in Southern Sudan.
