Turmoil in the Sudanese community flared this week, when a Sudanese youth was attacked and a Victorian detective was bashed by a group of Sudanese youths. Recently, 2 Victorian police officers went to Sudan to gain a better understanding of the community. Joey Herrech, Senior Constable, Victoria Police describes the plight of Sudan as horrific. Ian Gillespie, Senior Sergeant, Victoria Police acknowledges that there has been an increase in police patrols around Sudanese communities in Dandenong. Recent events including the bashing death of Liep Gony has scared the community. BJ Kour, Sudanese Refugee is studying at Swinburne University and is critical of comments made by Kevin Andrews, Federal Minister for Immigration and Citizenship. Flemington and Kensington Community Legal Service as lodged 18 complaints against police with the office of Police Integrity. Herrech's job is to pass on his experiences in Sudan to other Australian police. Gillespie describes Sudanese people as extremely hard working and nice people.
